The flute in the acoustic part of this recording is made from Sumac. From one end of the lake to the other the vegetable material has been altered in many subtle ways until I retrieve it on the farther shore. I gather the now spalted wood from the edge of the lake and bring it home. If it cracks, I compost it. If it does not, I use the techniques I have learned to transform a hollow stem into a flute.

I use the NA system of dual-chambered, ducted sound holes. The smooth air from the first chamber is blown over a carefully cut hole in the stem of the second, acoustic chamber. The dynamics of this passageway down the stem rival that of the end-blown Japanese Shakuhachi. The mystery of cutting the exact shape and arrangement of the holes in the NA flute is not secret, but not easily won.

Theremin is an electronic instrument that rivals more natural instruments in the expression of the innermost self. Never having been surpassed in this by other electronic music-making devices, it is a growing passion for a number of instrumentalists all over the world.
